Preventing Computer Viruses
Taking Precautions 4
What are Viruses and Worms
Computer Viruses are malicious pieces of computer code (short programs) that can attach themselves to documents or other programs. Like real viruses have the ability to copy or replicate themselves. Worms (Internet Worms) on the other hand are stand alone programs which again can send copies of themselves to other computers
For both, the "pay load" - the damage they do - can vary from a simple message on the screen or slowing your system down, to destroying most of your work or bringing down your office network. The latest generation of Internet worms can leave your computer wide open to others so that personal and financial information is not safe.
They can be passed on through sharing floppy discs or more commonly these days as e-mail attachments.
Preventing Viruses
It is advisable to take sensible precautions see side panel. However, these alone are not guaranteed to stop viruses. Can you rely on your staff, or other people who use your computer to be careful? Likewise, a friend or colleague may have innocently forwarded an infected e-mail to you. This is why it is important to use a suitable anti-virus package as well.

strongly recommend AVG Anti-Virus, which uses revolutionary technology to ensure complete and efficient virus detection.
It has never, in our experience, conflicted with hardware or software installed on computers; the same cannot be said of some well known brands of anti-virus software.
On the contrary we have on many occasions had to attend to systems which were experiencing problems such as running slow. Upon uninstalling the well known brand of anti-virus and replacing it with AVG, the probelms ceased!
