Patching your System

Microsoft Update

It is important to keep your computer systems up to date; to make sure that any recently discovered bugs or security problems are corrected.

Microsoft Update in an online service from Microsoft which helps you to maintain Windows and keep it up to date. It allows you to download and automatically install Service Packs, updated drivers and 'patches'. Occasionally there will be updates for installed programs such as 'Office'.

Patches are small add-ons or repairs to Windows and some programs such as Internet Explorer. Most important are the 'Security Updates' which address vulnerabilities that have been identified.

Automatic Updates

If you have Windows XP with Service Pack 2 installed (and most systems will), then this will have turned on "Automatic Updates". This will download and install all the important updates automatically - or notify you when they are available.

Note: Microsoft do not send out emails with updates attached. Should you get one of these purporting to come from Microsoft, delete it immediately as it will almost certainly contain malicious software such as a virus.

Keeping your system updated is just as important to your security as having good anti-virus software. Visit Microsoft Update by clicking here or on the banner above. This is very important for users of earlier versions of Windows, which may not have the automatic updates enabled.
