Virus Hoaxes

You may have received an email from a friend or associate warning you of a new very dangerous virus. These emails usually contain DIRE WARNINGS and the advice to forward the warning to all your contacts.

Almost invariably they are HOAXES, for example the 'invitation virus'. If you do receive one the first thing to do is a search on Google for a phrase within the email along with the word 'virus', this will usually confirm whether it is genuine or a hoax.

As a general rule don't forward "chain emails"

Preventing Computer Viruses and Trojans

Worms, Trojans, Spyware etc., are malicious pieces of computer code (short programs) that can infect your computer.

For all infections the 'pay load' - the damage they do - can vary from changing the 'home page' of Internet Explorer or slowing your system down; to rendering the computer almost unworkable or bringing down the office network. Some are designed to capture sensitive information by logging all your keyboard activity including pass words or 'screen grabbing' and pass the sensitive information on to fraudsters through the Internet. The latest generation of Internet worms can leave your computer wide open to others so that personal and financial information is not safe. Some viruses allow others to take control of your machine and use it to send out ‘Spam’, without you knowing that this is happening.

For further information see 'threats'.

Avoiding Becoming Infected

Avoiding becoming infected requires a combination of prudent behaviour AND Software tools to protect your systems. Prudent behaviour alone is not sufficient to stop infections. Can you rely on your staff, or other people who use your computer to be careful? Likewise, a friend or colleague may have innocently forwarded an infected e-mail to you. This is why it is important to use suitable anti-virus programs and other packages as well.

Buy AVG Anti-virus

Córas IT strongly recommend AVG Anti-Virus, which uses revolutionary technology to ensure complete and efficient virus detection. It has never, in our experience, conflicted with hardware or software installed on computers; the same cannot be said of some well known brands of anti-virus software.
